About STEAM Outreach Events
STEAM Outreach Events provide UW students with short-term opportunities to learn alongside K-12 students, educators, and community partners. Participants receive training from Riverways staff and work with fellow UW student volunteers to co-facilitate hands-on activities that connect science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Our approach to STEAM is broad and it integrates visual communication/design, storytelling, and culturally grounded arts practices into STEM learning.
These events are especially well suited for students who are new to outreach or community engagement and want to build experience before applying for longer-term Riverways opportunities. Students from all majors are welcome!
Ways to Participate
Site Visits
Travel with Riverways staff and fellow UW students to a partner school or community organization to co-facilitate hands-on STEAM activities with K-12 students. Depending on the partnership and event, site visits may range from a one-day outreach event to a multi-day experience that includes travel and two days of programming.
Campus Visits
Welcome K-12 students from rural and Tribal communities to the UW Seattle campus and support STEAM activities, campus exploration, and opportunities for students to learn about STEM higher education and career pathways.

Activity topics vary based on partner priorities, student interests, and grant priorities. Past STEAM Outreach Events have included:
- NASA Lotería

- Robotics & Coding
- Wa'paas weaving
- Earth Science
- Space Tools
What Participants Do
Participants:
- Attend event- and activity-specific training led by Riverways staff.
- Prepare activity materials and supplies with Riverways staff and fellow UW student volunteers.
- Co-facilitate hands-on STEAM activities with K-12 students. This may include presenting slides, leading demonstrations, facilitating small-group activities, and supporting students as they design, create, investigate, or build.
How to Get Involved
Join the Riverways Student Opportunities mailing list to receive announcements about upcoming STEAM Outreach Events. Each announcement will include the event date, location, time commitment, training requirements, and sign-up instructions.
Students may sign up for individual opportunities that align with their interests and availability. Space may be limited for some events.
