The needs of these communities are often neglected in science, so I hope to do something in the future where I can advocate for communities that are close to the land, and be able to bridge the gap between social and environment needs.

Which community did you volunteer at, and what did you work on while you were there?

I have been going to Brewster, WA since my first year with (Environmental) ASB. At Brewster, we visit the 6th grade science class all week and we have been able to learn all about the environment around them – the soil, rivers, animals, dams and more! Outside of the classroom, we have been able to connect with the community in amazing ways, like meeting parents, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and going to community events.

How has being a part of ASB impacted your goals and dreams for the future?

Visiting a community that is surrounded by the agriculture industry was eye opening for me as someone who is planning on going into the environmental field. I think it’s so important to remember the communities directly impacted by agriculture and other resources we use the land for. The needs of these communities are often neglected in science, so I hope to do something in the future where I can advocate for communities that are close to the land, and be able to bridge the gap between social and environment needs.

What is a favorite memory you have during your time with ASB?

I have so many! One that really stands out was my first year, right before our first class. I was super nervous and one of the students introduces himself, introduces the teacher and says “Welcome to Brewster! You’re welcome here anytime!” That was so sweet and it definitely eased my nerves!  I think ASB is just awesome, everyone should do it and I wish I got involved sooner!
