Jumpstart Student Equity Officer

The Jumpstart Student Equity Officer (SEO) is a crucial position in helping Jumpstart realize its racial equity goals and in supporting the recruitment and retention efforts of students from diverse identity backgrounds (racial, ethnic, cultural, language, ability, etc.). They will lead and participate in a variety of events, meetings, activities and training, including the planning and execution of Jumpstart's annual Week of Workshops in February and ongoing Open Forum events.

Description
Recruitment and Retention
- Support recruitment efforts in collaboration with Site Managers and the Program Assistants in Fall Quarter, which may include tabling on UW campus, speaking in classrooms or at RSO meetings, and attending recruitment events with SMs and PAs
- Support retention efforts by planning and attending various commuity-building events, including leading the Open Forums and attending other Jumpstart evening/weekend events (minimal)
- Work closely with Jumpstart site managers in creating an equitable, welcoming, and social justice-oriented program through ongoing assessments of the program and weekly check-ins with their supervisor
Facilitating Courageous Conversations
- Facilitate quarterly 3-part Open Forum series that center the stories and needs of Black, Indigenous peoples, People of Color, LGBTQ+ students, womxn and other marginalized groups. Examples include exploring one's own social and racial identities, connecting understanding of intersectionality to our service in schools, disability justice, and our roles in dismantling racism in education
- Plan and execute Jumpstart's annual Week of Workshops, aimed to support the professional and personal growth of Jumpstart, CELE, and other UW students
- Facilitate DEI-related conversations during weekly Team Leader meetings, with the purpose of supporting Team Leaders development of their own equity lens, especially in relation to implementing the Jumpstart curriculum (i.e. acknowledging themes or moments in children's storybooks that may perpetuate stereotypes; researching and sharing children's songs from around the world; providing space to discuss what's going on in the classroom that may have layers of inequity/unfairness, etc.)
- Lead and support student workgroups by creating meeting agendas, co-creating goals for events, creating a welcoming environment, incorporating ideas from previous years and soliciting ideas from members and site managers for upcoming events, delegating tasks as necessary, tracking member attendance, and documenting learning outcomes and feedback
- Collaborate with other Jumpstart and CELE students and staff on various projects and events
Marginal Functions
- Support the creation of weekly newsletters for all Jumpstart members, incorporating educational material for heritage months, ways members can get involved with DEI work in Jumpstart and surrounding communities, upcoming events related to leadership and equity lens development, and community building questions/moments of joy
- Attend regular Jumpstart student staff meetings
- Attend occasional CELE Center trainings and events
- Support the implementation of Jumpstart DEI Committee work with guidance from Site Manager
- Potential to lead trainings/workshops for Jumpstart members
- Support Family Engagement efforts during planning and execution stages
- Research relevant community organizations and service events to coordinate additional hours and team/community building opportunities for Jumpstart Corps Members.
- Research relevant campus partners or community organizations to coordinate additional leadership and/or professional development opportunities for Jumpstart Corps Members.
The Student Equity Officer will receive weekly supervision and regular training on relevant career topics. The minimum time commitment for the Student Equity Officer is 12 hours per week.
Required qualifications
- Must be eligible for Federal Work Study
- Student must have some experience in and knowledge of social justice issues, understand the real impacts of oppression and the various types of oppression that exist at least within the context of the U.S. (i.e. racism, sexism, ableism, elitism, etc.)
Ability to work and build relationships with people (especially students and staff members) from diverse ethnic, racial, educational, ability, and socioeconomic backgrounds
Must have strong and clear communication skills (written and verbal)
Should be comfortable working with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Canvas, Canva, social media, and learning other systems as necessary. Willing to train the right person
Have a positive attitude and interest in promoting service and leadership initiatives
Ability to work on a team and independently on daily tasks, ask questions when unsure, and to commit to a regular office schedule set on a quarterly basis
Ability to work and build relationships with people (especially students and staff members) from diverse ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Ability to tailor communication to various people based on learning/working strengths and cultural relevance.
Ability to lead both live and recorded presentations.
Maturity and good judgment in relating to Jumpstart and CELE Center peers.
Dependable and easily adaptable to unexpected changes or challenges
Demonstrated ability to solve problems and think strategically.
Ability to commit to full school year
Desired skills and abilities
- Bi-/multilingual/cultural
- Junior/Senior/Graduate student standing or equivalent work or training experience;
- Lived in or familiar with communities Jumpstart typically serves (South Seattle, White Center, Des Moines)
- Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs. for small distances in office and storage space.
